A rarely found “Le Congo” embroidery thread example, it has three drawers which would have held white, black and colored embroidery thread. It originates from the south of France and dates towards 1880. We sell the box only: the threads are for display and size reference.

This box would have served in a fine needlework shop. “Le Congo-Lin” was a brand of linen embroidery thread. The box is made of hard paper board which has been covered with “wallpaper” which has a printed design of gilded flowers and leaves (the paper has faded from a brilliant green seen on the bottom of the box to more of a beige color. The top of the box bears the log for the brand, and shows workers in the fields harvesting flax from the field. The slogan below reads, “Ce nouveau FIL de LIN rivalise avec la SOIE par sa regularite, sa force, sa souplesse and son brillant. (this new linen thread competes with silk for it’s regularity, strength, flexibility and brilliance). This advertising label is rarely found.

The three drawers each have a fine brass handle. Each drawer has the name of the color, noir, blanc, couleurs. There is a small ledge at the bottom with a hole punch for attaching to a counter. It measures: 4 1/2” tall, 3 5/8” wide: the drawers 3 1/2” x 1 1/2”. It is in amazing condition for the age and fragility of the paper: wear to edges and corners typical with age: please look carefully at the photos as they are the best description. The large logo label still retains the original colors. We picture the threads for reference only: we sell the box without the threads.

It is a rarely found advertising box and a very interesting example from the late 19th century.
