This vintage German salt glaze stein is a gorgeous example of its kind. The grey stoneware ceramic is richly ornamented, hand painted a deep cobalt blue. The figural scene is exceptionally detailed, and features a family of deer with a stag at the front watching out for his family. They are standing under a canopy of trees while a hunter watches them from a distance. The bottom border includes flying birds at opposite sides of the handle with a scroll design joining them in the middle. A braided handle is centered on the back of the stein and seems to blend in with the trees pictured in the scene.
It is in good condition for its age with minimal imperfections. There are no chips or cracks: there are a few small air bubbles around the rim and interior of the stein that are natural to the pottery making process.T he stein is 7 1/2 inches tall from the base to the rim. It is 4 inches across including the handle, which measures 3 inches tall. The opening of the rim measures 2 1/4 inches wide.
A bright and lovely example, its incredible detail draws attention from anyone who sees it.
