This amazing domed top oak trunk from Denmark is a rare find. The original dark paint remains along with the date of 1797(seen on the top). Unique to this chest is the four figural panels which each portray the Passion of Christ, from praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, carrying the cross to Calvary and finally Christ’s crucifixion. The elaborate wrought iron details include the massive side handles, corners, straps and long hinges add attractive detail and weight. Unique is the “cross configuration” of the iron straps at each end, adding to the religious theme of this remarkable trunk. The interior is clean and in the upper left is a small storage compartment originally used for smaller personal items within the large interior. Notice the substantial iron key, required to open the very heavy oak top. This trunk has been restored, it is in solid condition and has been given a wax finish. Note expected age-related separation of planks, particularly the domed top.
