This is one of the finest examples of Victorian mourning jewelry that I have come across! The crenellated brooch element sports a half moon of ten lustrous pearls set in rose gold. An attached triangle of gold holds a fan shaped gold pendant detailed with black enamel and six tiny pearls. That piece, in turn, holds a (12 mm X 21 mm) faceted onyx drop set with three leaves of pearl set gold. The bottom portion is articulated so that it dangles from the brooch. The back of the brooch has a heavy rose gold pin and clasp attachment as well as a ring allowing the piece to be worn as a pendant. The piece is 1 3/8" side to side and 1 5/8" top to bottom.
There is a flake of onyx missing on the inside of one of the legs of the brooch and another flea bite on the onyx of the other leg. Neither is visible from the front of t he brooch. There is no damage to the faceted dangle piece. The lovely rose gold tests as 14K.
