Extraordinary large pole arm in the form of a glaive or pole axe. Broad 25 inch cutting head mounted on a wood pole. Overall length 64 inches. Dark patina indicating great age. Wood haft is an early replacement. Acquired from a New Orleans estate. Reputably from Haiti where it was used as a weapon.
Historical note: Many creole families immigrated to New Orleans during the Haitian Revolution. They brought goods and slaves and blended into French speaking communities. They remained an identifiable Louisiana subculture into the 20th century.
