This is a splendid 19th century Grand Tour micromosaic plaque depicting a view of the Roman Forum. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop during the 18th century. Items adorned with micromosaics were luxurious souvenirs for tourist making their Grand Tour across Europe. Jewelers from European countries ordered small micromosaic plaques to set in jewelry and boxes. Today, micromosaic plaques are highly sought after by collectors.
The micromosaic is in excellent condition. The tiny tesserae are smooth and in perfect condition. There are some light scratches on the back of the black glass surround.
