Antique Black Forest bear hand carved in Switzerland.
Switzerland, 19th century
This charming Black Forest carving of a strolling bear has a captivating expression rendered with inset glass eyes and painted nose and mouth. The rich patina and well-defined coloration emphasize the tone and depth of this classic carving.
This bear would have been sold at one of the famous Swiss resorts as a souvenir for a well-to-do Victorian tourist. Today, Swiss carvings are highly desirable among collectors and interior decorators. This carving is in very good condition with minor wear to the nose and a light scuff on one paw. There is an old professional repair to the tip of this paw, visible on the underside only. This Black Forest bear could be a wonderful addition to your rustic cabin, mountain chalet, or hunting lodge. The items in the last photograph are for display only and are not included.
