How Sweet Redwork Penny Square Embroidered Child's Coverlet
Truly a sweetie. Turn of the century typical quilt top coverlet with hand embroidered penny squares of a wonderful variety of charming images embroidered in Turkey Red floss sewn together 7 across and 7 blocks. Center block says How sweet you will be after using me. All of the blocks are done in red, pink and blue on white cotton. There are cute blocks showing little boy and girl pushing a wheelbarrow, blowing bubbles, a wise owl, a comb and brush, animals, birds on a branch, flowers, fruit, a girl sweeping with a broom with a cat and much more. Pre-printed squares ready to embroider were sold at the turn of the century for use with the colorfast turkey red thread. Because they originally cost only about a penny apiece they were commonly called penny squares.
This is a beautiful example of the form. I've carefully hand washed and line dried.
Measures 46 ½” x 45” Would look fabulous displayed on a child's bed finished as a summer comfort, bedspread or quilt. Or hang on a wall to display.
