How Sweet Penny Square Embroidered Child's Quilt Top
Early turn of the century typical quilt top coverlet with hand embroidered penny squares of a wonderful variety of charming images embroidered in blue, pink, white and variegated floss sewn together with the seams embroidered in feather stitch Turkey Red. All of the blocks are done on natural muslin cotton. There's a motto block saying "How Sweet You Will Be After Using Me" and more cute blocks showing little boy pushing a girl in a wheel barrow, a boy blowing bubbles, animals, birds including two splendid wise owls, little girl with umbrellas, pansy and lily flowers, little girl in a chair with a cat and face of a boy in a hat among other charming images. Pre-printed squares ready to embroider were sold at the turn of the century for use with the colorfast turkey red thread. Because they originally cost only about a penny apiece they were commonly called penny squares. This is a beautiful example of the form. I've carefully hand washed and line dried and ironed. The pink floss used to embroider the motto had run a bit, and there are a few age stains remaining. Measures 45" x 45" square. Would look fabulous displayed on a child's bed or on a wall as is or easily finished as a summer comfort, bedspread or quilt.
