Redwork Penny Square Embroidered Child's Coverlet
Turn of the century typical quilt top coverlet with hand embroidered penny squares of a wonderful variety of charming images embroidered in Turkey Red floss sewn together 4 across and 8 down in center and bordered with plain fabric in the drops.
All of the blocks are done in red on white cotton. There are cute blocks showing little boy and girl bathing in a wading pool, a comb and brush, animals, birds including a wise owl, flowers, fruit, a good luck emblem, pottery and butterflies and bees with children and their pets.
Pre-printed squares ready to embroider were sold at the turn of the century for use with the colorfast turkey red thread. Because they originally cost only about a penny apiece they were commonly called penny squares.
This is a beautiful example of the form. I've carefully hand washed and line dried and ironed.
Measures 57" x 60"
Would look fabulous displayed on a child's bed as it is hemmed and finished as a summer comfort, bedspread or quilt.
