German souvenir china toothpick holder with a street scene looking, "West from Davis Hotel, Brazil, Indiana." Horse-drawn conveyances sit in the street outside two to four story buildings downtown. This is an early souvenir view as the picture is black and white, rather than hand colored like later examples, and there are no electric lines or poles in view. It is decorated with transfer printed roses on either side at the top of the picture.
Condition: Wear to the printed roses and the top of one of the buildings in the picture; porcelain body in excellent condition, no chips or cracks. Marked with a round stamped "Made in Germany" mark in red on the bottom.
Measures 2 1/4 inches tall, has a bottom diameter of 1 1/2 inches and a top diameter of 1 3/4 inches.
Souvenir china views were created from original photographs supplied to the manufacturer by the local group or company commissioning them. A transfer was made from their (black and white) photo and then applied to the article(s) ordered. German-made scenic 'china' articles typically were hard paste porcelain, which has helped them survive through time. Popular souvenirs between 1890 and the mid-1930's, today they offer us tiny windows on the past.
Uncommon antiques for the investor and choice collectibles for the clever collector.
COLLECTION: A time machine on a shelf; a museum in the kitchen. Reach out to touch the memory of sweet childhood laughter.
