A superb antique English transferware platter by Davenport. Dark cobalt blue on a white ground, second image best illustrates the depth of its blue. An uncommon platter form having a raised center meat plateau. Border design from the scarce Cornucopia Flower Border series by Davenport ca. 1825. The intricate view is a pastoral river scene with buttressed church, arched bridge and house on the opposite bank of the river. Two rustic figures in the shade of the trees in the foreground appear to be tending a sluice gate. Nice large size measuring 15 1/4 inches by 12 1/4 inches exhibits a lot of presence on display.

In very good condition. On the front of the platter we see a flaw on the raised edge of the center plateau (illustrated), a pinpoint peck in the foreground and moderate utensil marks best seen only on closeup inspection with a raking light. Outside edge which is the area typically chipped on most platters over time has no damage. In the center of the back side there is a long, Y-shaped hairline that under magnification with a loupe appears to be only slightly deeper than the surface glaze and does not appear to go very deep into the body. This flaw can only be seen on the back, not the front. No repairs, it is as time has made it. To my eye the image of the reverse where the piece is shown against a black background appears to show it having a chip at the top edge, but that is only a smear of dark blue transfer color under the glaze.

The ability of this piece to withstand normal use and many years in such a fine state is a testament to the excellent quality of Davenport's wares. Incredible, deep blue is a delight for the eye. Marked with impressed 'Davenport' (upper case) with anchor and the number '21'. Also the number '8' stamped in blue.
