Miguel Melendez Sterling Taxco Mexican Spider Web Mosaic Modernist Signed Pendant Brooch Necklace
This fabulous vintage pendant medallion necklace is made of sterling silver and inlaid with green stone mosaic. It has a gorgeous modernist open work or cut work design. The pendant can also be worn as a large brooch. When you are wearing it as a necklace, just pin the centerpiece to your clothes so the pin stem doesn't show (this also keeps the pendant from flipping over when you wear it. The pendant measures just shy of 2 1/8" across. The chain closes with a hook, tests to be sterling and measures about 25" long. The pendant/brooch is signed with the maker's mark of MIGUEL MELENDEZ which is the encircled scripted initial M (mark is partial as seen). It is also marked STERLING TAXCO and has the eagle mark with a 3 inside. Miguel Melendez was a very talented silversmith who was trained by Antonio Castillo at the William Spratling Taller de las Delicias and he later worked for Margot de Taxco. Good vintage condition with a nice warm patina (tarnish) to the sterling. There are a few tiny voids in the mosaic which look to have been in the making. The total weight including the chain is about 42.3 grams. You will love this!!!
