Engraved SWEETHEART Whiting Sterling Antique Estate Shoehorn
What a beautiful circa 1893 Victorian era shoehorn! It measures about 6 5/8" long by about 1 5/8" at the widest point of the blade or "horn" part. It is monogrammed with the initials JHM on the front and CBB on the back. Best of all, it is engraved SWEETHEART on the back. It is signed with a maker's mark of a griffin or winged lion with the initial W and also marked STERLING which is the mark of WHITING MANUFACTURING CO. (which became a part of Gorham in 1926) numbered 3905 and marked PAT. 1893. The weight is about 41.1 grams. There is an issue to mention - the blade part shows a lot of waviness or light bending and some porosity to the blade which I tried to show. Otherwise, age appropriate wear including some smoothing to the sterling. I still think this is a treasure especially since it is engraved sweetheart and was given as a gift to someone's love.
