Fabulous SATSUMA Handpainted Pottery Porcelain Antique Brooch - Butterfly & Flowers - Meiji Period
What a fabulous antique Satsuma brooch! It was long ago converted to a brooch from a buckle. It is made of Satsuma porcelain (also called Satsuma pottery or ceramic) and hand painted with a detailed flower design with butterflies in the corners. The colors are light blue and deep coral with touches of gold, gray and black. The Satsuma background is cream colored, and the edge is very deep blue, almost black. Truly a wearable work of art! The brooch measures about 1 7/8" across by 1 9/16" high. It has a C type of clasp with no safety. We would estimate this was made around the turn of the century from late Victorian era to early Edwardian era. Good antique condition with light age wear to the painting as seen, and the typical crazing you see in old Satsuma. Beautiful for wearing or for your display case. You will treasure it!!!
