This is a wonderful bronze medal in high relief of Anton Lang in 1924 as he played Christ in the Oberammergau Passion Play. A troupe of actors from Oberammergau toured the US in 1924 and these look to have been made especially for that trip. This one is quite unique and rare because it bears Lang's original signature and date, etched into the back. A beautiful patina!
Anton Lang was an artist, actor and potter who played the Christ figure in the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1900, 1910, and 1922. In 1924, Lang, along with a group of his fellow actors, made a trip to the United States where he threw some pots at Rookwood Pottery in Ohio (Lang is often misrepresented as a Rookwood employee, he was not). Lang died in 1938.
