It's always such a pleasure to get work by the taller of Los Ballesteros whose work is widely known and highly collectible. This is a wonderful pair of obsidian earrings by that taller with the earrings being obsidian that has been carved into mask-like shapes, almost a skull. The obsidian has a nice sheen to it and hang from screwbacks that have a sterling silver front and an Alpaca screw mechanism. Quite unusual and I would say unique!
Dating Los Ballesteros work can be difficult since they are still producing today and were inconsistent in hallmarking throughout the years, I estimate that these earrings are circa 1940s.
The family taller of Los Ballesteros began silversmithing in Iguala in 1937, then moved to Taxco in 1941 where they were and continue to be a large and very successful manufacturer and retailer.
