We have 2 sets of 5 each - small Japanese dinner plates. They are hand made and appear rustic, not highly polished. We do not think they were used. The small square ones measure about 4.5" - 4.75". They are edged with a cloth tape before the lacquer was applied. The larger plates are 8.25" x 4-5/8" and seem to be more uniform in size. There are 5 each (10 all together), suggesting that they were not made for export. The smaller plates are coaster size or a bit bigger and the rectangular plates have slightly upturned ends. They would make great display stands for flower arrangements or other treasures. Or, you can serve sushi or other food on them. We do not know what is etched on the bottom but will try to get it translated. They do not seem to have any scratches or cracks.* Check the photos as we are not sure what that process of lacquering is called. Looks like they may have been lacquered black and then red.
*We just noticed that one of the rectangular plates is cracked on both ends at the bend. And 2 of the other rectangular plates have flea bites along the edge. See added photos. And note reduced price.
Note: the word on the bottom of the plates is "utsuwa" or plate
