Chagu Chagu Umakko is a horse festival in Iwate Prefecture in Japan. The term chagu chagu is an onomatopoeic expression for the sound made by the horses' bells. There are many souvenir horses from the Festival - usually wood - colorfully painted and adorned with ribbons and bells. Ours is papier mache and also has a nodding, bobbing head. It is 4" long or 5" counting the straw tail. The paper label at the front says sho fuku or good luck. It is loose at the top corner. This is a beautiful example of papier mache nodding folk toys from Japan.
