This is a Japanese round fan or uchiwa that is used in Japanese folk dances. This one is from the Shitennoji Temple Shrine in Osaka and is larger than the usual ones. The paper fan part measures 11-1/2" wide and 11" tall and the handle is 5" x 1/2" wide. Although you can find them made from plastic, the nice ones are bamboo that is fanned out with the paper fan parts affixed - so one piece of bamboo is used. The picture looks hand-painted but we would doubt that it is. The 3 children are either playing or dancing. The red stamp on the back says Shitennoji. The fan is in excellent condition.
