Here's a nice New England find --- an old painted blanket chest with the former owners name and town ("J.L. Kelly, Woodford Crossing") which is located just outside of Portland , Maine. It probably dates from the mid 1800s, judging from the construction techniques and materials. The extant buttermilk paint (blue--green) is totally there! The design is nothing fancy -- fairly typical, sedate scrolled bracket foot molding on the three visible sides. The corners are joined by square butt-nails, not dovetailed. The lock mechanism is missing and judging from some small holes at the front, was tied shut at one time. The unpainted interior is clean and has the original small, lidded candle box.
Small enough (37" long, 19" tall, 16" wide) to serve as a great storage coffee table!
