A nice representative piece that has been well maintained over the years and mercifully escaped the ravages of "renewal" and renovation. The most prominent design elements of the Jacobean are The geometric panels on the front, ball front feet and stylized chip carved spandrel decoration at the top of the front frame member. The hinges were replaced sometime in the 19th century and the mortise lock and hasp look original. The mechanism is intact and should work if we had a key (which we don't). All timber used throughout is original and strong and unaffected by rot or wood beetles. Mortise and tenon construction has been employed at every frame juncture and even the finish and patina remains correct as you would want it.
Fortunately for a coffer of this date it is not so behemoth as most, measuring 44" length by 21" deep and 29" high. It weighs about 100 lbs, so two people can manage it easily. If you don't have any plate or armor to secure then it would make wonderful storage for linens, blankets or whatever.
