Well-provenanced solid walnut Lancaster county,Pennsylvania tall-case clock with painted dial, moonphase dial, calendar window and very unusual sweep-second hand. Eight-day movement, bell strike on the hour. Hand-painted initials and date: "GB 1773", attributed to GEORGE BLECKER. Letters and receipts establish chain of original ownership from the RASCOVER FAMILY of Lancaster to estate of DR. WILLIAM SANGER, longtime President of the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School(Richmond Va.) Documents included.

Condition appears to complete, original and correct. Solid walnut case, movement, dial, pendulum and dial are of American make and not English as is so often seen on colonial clocks. Movement was serviced and case professionally refinished in 1965. It keeps excellent time. Height is 8'1". Aside from some minor paint loss to the dial condition overall is superb.

The design and case aesthetics are as understated and fine as they have ever been at any period in the evolution of colonial grandfather clocks.
The slender case, the proud broken-arch pediment hood, the short cabriole feet and the use of simple, solid, American walnut, with no frivolous inlays or veneers exemplify early Yankee craftsmanship skills acquired in England.

The "American" pedigree is absolutely established by the vaulted cut-out movement plates and dovetailed joinery at the back of the hood.
Tall-case American clocks predating the revolution with provenance and unique attributes like this don't come on the market often.

Due to the difficulties of shipping-- risk of damage and expense, it is strongly recommended that the clock be picked up here in Richmond, or contact if you would like to see it in person.

We will deliver it and set it up for free anywhere within 200 miles of Richmond.
