Here is a very nice earlier 1900's Grand Army of the Republic membership badge/medal, to add to your collection. For those of you who may not know what the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was, it was the first fraternal organization for Union veterans, who fought in the Civil War. It was formed in 1866, and continued to hold annual encampments through the 1940's. Holding them in national, state, and local locations. The very last national encampment, the 83rd, was held in Indianapolis, Indiana as the final encampment, on Aug. 28, 1949. Although there were 16 fellows still living, only 6 were hardy enough to make the trip, ranging in age from 100 to 108. It would stand to reason, that the final encampment would be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, because it was the first place in Nov. 1866, that the GAR held its national encampment.
This medal is well struck and has its ribbon intact. It is numbered on the upper edge if the star point at 4-o'clock, B 36797. Supposedly the "B" before the number is the last name initial of the GAR National Commander-In -Chief, of that year, that the medal was made. Unfortunately from 1904 through 1913, there were 5 commanders-in chiefs with the last name beginning with a "B." If some GAR historian would know how to tell when exactly this medal was made. Any information would be greatly appreciated. It measures 3-3/16" in length, by 1-13/16" across its widest point, the two horizontal star arms. Don't miss out on adding this great piece of GAR history to your collection. It will be wrapped and packaged very well. We attempt to be as accurate as possible with our descriptions, so there are no surprises to the lucky buyer. Our photos should tell you just about all of the rest.
