Peg wooden is an early 11 1/2" jointed primitive doll that was crudely hand carved in Germany (possibly the Grodner Tal region in Austria) circa 1880 to 1920. Her facial features have been painted in a simplistic manner and contrast with her painted black hair detailed with gray "shadowing." Her wooden parts are primitive in their design and structure, and sustain imperfections and "gouges" to their wood. Please notice her crudely carved "nub" nose! Peg Wooden is jointed at her shoulders, elbows, thighs, and knees. Her joints bend stiffly. She is wearing an appealing plaid dress and coordinating hat that have discolored (more notably along their front sides) and become soiled and worn with age. The outfit's shoulder and hat trim have deteriorated. Completing her outfit are a pair of pantaloons. Both she and her outfit smell dusty. Peg Wooden remains a charming and earlier example of a "Dutch Penny Wooden" doll with her "sedate" expression.
