*** This cross pendant is signed Vega, on the back, in the center of the cross. I was able to read it using some good reading glasses and a 10X loupe. The signature is hidden under a couple of scratches, but is there, easy to read if you have good eyes.
*** Some of Vega Maddux pieces were signed with a simple letter V on the back of the jewelry, or just with her name, Vega. You have to figure out where her signature is sometimes. Many of them are not signed but is impossible not to identify them immediately.
Her style was not replicated and cannot be. It takes too much personality, soul, determination, joy of life, energy, to imitate her art. Her jewelry is dramatic, bursting with imagination, color, impetuosity, extravagance and eccentricity. It is not middle way in liking VEGA MADDUX. You just like her or not. But she will transcend time, through the collections that are coveted here and there by people who love VEGA MADDUX' s art work.
VEGA MADDUX was a very special and talented human being. People who can see beyond the ordinary are amazed by her vision, courage and artistry. Her body of work becomes less and less accessible as time goes by. Her jewelry creations will transcend time and will enchant the eye of the art lovers. She used metals and stones within our reach and transposed them into extraordinary pieces, breaking common patterns and routines.
VEGA MADDUX was a Californian artist, singer, designer, artisan who started selling her pieces of jewelry in the 1960's, until the time of her death in the 1990's. Unlike other artists, you cannot find easily her creations because they were bought by people who knew her, appreciated her art and now, they just want to enjoy them for a shorter or longer period of time. These collectors do not sell easily their collections yet. Her works changed in time from very simple and organic forms to sophisticated and pretentious art pieces. From almost monochromatic pieces with subtle tone of colors, she reached the level of exuberance, using vivid colorful stones and enamels. All stones and enamels were set and applied on silver settings, gold plated silver or brass.
I was lucky to acquire very few of her early jewelry and I will continue to look for more. It is not an easy process.
* The cross that I have for sale now is part of her very early work, it is signed, and very much recognizable for Vega's style. This cross is a large size pendant, embellished with dominant and natural stones: a marvelous green aventurine . It has a modernist free form aspect, very bold and powerful in appearance. The stones are bezel set, smoothly polished to perfection. The bezel settings of the stones are surrounded by antiqued silver channels. In her recent work she was filling those channels, areas, with colorful enamel. In her early work the enamel is less present. Beading work accents nicely some sections of the cross.
* Measurements of the cross are: N-S is 4 3/4" or 125 mm, E-W is 3 3/4" or 93 mm, the aventurine stone raises at 10 mm high.
* Condition is vintage with patina of age that I did not clean, did not touch, ready to wear or to hang on the wall.
