This is a large and impressive plein air painting that likely shows Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California just north of San Francisco. The 30" by 27" work (42" by 38" impressively framed) is signed at lower right "Ramon Vale". The artist is listed as "Raymond Vale" in the Hughes dictionary of California artists. The biography states simply that Vale was active in Northern California in the 1920's. This painting successfully handles a popular subject that has been addressed by any number of plein-air artists---the flowering hillside in the spring months. Poppies and lupine are often part of that mix. The painting is in excellent condition. ST
