Charles Philip Slocombe (1832 -1895) , rare a very finely painted watercolor of perhaps a veteran or "old soldier", seated in a chair by a window as the sun streams in. He wears what appears as a red formal ceremonial dress uniform. He seems quite introspective, lost in his own thoughts, those thoughts perhaps relating to events that took place decades in the past. The drawing is signed at lower right, signature hidden under mat "C.P. Slocombe 1870". The condition is exceptional, the red not faded. Note the details of the antique grandfather clock at right rear, the hat, other clothing, the window---all very satisfying. The light is handled with great skill. The measurements are 19" by 11 1/2" inside the mat and 28" by 20" framed in a high quality frame.
