Absolutely beautiful impressionist painting of a scene by Holland's Zuyder Zee, 18" by 22" and 30" by 33" with old gold frame, signed at lower left and titled there by the well listed American artist Frank Crawford Penfold (1849-1921). The painting features marvelous brush strokes and jewel-like colors. Penfold was born in Lockport, New York, near Buffalo, and continued to spend time in the Buffalo area throughout his life. From a family of artists, he presented two paintings at the Buffalo Society of Artists in 1875 while only in his mid twenties. By 1877 Penfold was in France, painting at the Pont Aven art colony in Brittany. He spent much of his life there, painting and teaching, returning periodically to Buffalo, where he became president of the Buffalo Society of Artists in 1896. Penfold exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1892-3, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, at the Albright Museum, Paris Salons, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Distraught over his wife's death, he committed suicide in Concarneau, France in 1921. This painting retains on the frame an old blue label from Hoddicks Fine Art Store, 620 Main Street, Buffalo, and another partial old label has some writing on it that is essentially illegible. ***The frame has some losses at upper right, from transport; some but not all of these pieces have been retained, so as to facilitate repair. The inner portion of the frame, at lower left, has loosened up as well, from this transport.
