The nicely composed landscape appears to be set in a mountainous region of Japan, a high mountain ridge still bearing signs of the winter snows, and several foreground trees are in full pink springtime bloom. A traditional roofed building in the middle distance is offset by a modern day antenna beyond it. To his or her credit, the artist has painted the scene as it appeared, rather than through an artist's tinted glasses. The work, on canvas, measures 15" by 18" (19 1/2" by 22 1/2" framed). The artist apparently tried to work out the composition on the reverse of the canvas, a mountainous profile outlined there in pencil. The artist signed at lower left F. Kuwabara and dated 58'. An online search has not produced any biographical information on this talented artist.
