This is a beautifully painted still life oil painting of fruits in a landscape through the window, signed at lower right corner by the listed California artist Josephine Deane Valentine( 1873- 1945). On the reverse is a label of California Art Club. The painting was exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Art; the title of the painting "October offering" and the artist's address also appears there. Measurements are 28" by 30" and 34 1/2" by 36 1/2" framed. According to the biography in Hughes Dictionary of California Artists, the artist was born in Varna, Canada on July 14, 1873, a descendant of Admiral Nelson. Josephine moved to Michigan at age six months. She studied at the Universities of Michigan and Iowa before her marriage to Martin Valentine in 1904. Her art studies were at the Minnesota School of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and St Louis School of Art. She settled in Los Angeles in 1933 and became active in the local art scene. Painting trips were made to France, Portugal, Spain, Africa, Italy, and the Azores. Mrs. Valentine died in Hollywood, CA on Aug. 27, 1945.
