Signed faintly in pencil at lower left "L. Foster", this is a beautifully painted work in oil on masonite panel, 10" by 14" and 16" by 19 1/2" framed. The scene is clearly of the American west, with high distant mountain peaks reaching above a horizontal cloud deck. Red tile roof buildings with whitewashed walls also suggest California, though I suppose that the setting could be something like New Mexico. The vigorously impressionist style reminds me of the California master Selden Connor Gile, and I'd like to believe that this is by him, but that would be stretching the possibilities. The painting is in great condition frame. Small scratch on the right tree in the center. On the reverse as shown is a circa 1960 photo of a young man that was for some reason already on the panel or was later glued to it.
