This is a lovely oil in the plein air tradition, signed at lower right corner by the listed Swiss-California artist Werner Seeholzer. The landscape is likely of the San Gabriel mountains. Tall trees, possibly eucalyptus, and several houses combine to form a very pleasing California plein air classic. The artist was born in Basel, Switzerland. Trained as a pastry chef, we see him in California by the late 1930's. There he became a WPA employee. Today he is known for his urban scenes of Los Angeles and San Francisco. According to the biography in Hughes Dictionary of California Artists, he rarely exhibited or promoted his works. This painting has flaking losses at center right, and to a lesser extent in the central trees and a bottom. It should be stabilized and repaired, at which point this beautiful painting will be ready for display. On the reverse, the artist wrote his address, 191 No. Swall Drive, LA 48. Measurements 24" by 32" and 31" by 39" framed. W.
