This watercolor was executed by a trained and able hand, probably sometime in the 19th century in Italy, though the subject matter is of the 18th century. Signed at lower right "LAERTIO", the scene is comprised of two women sitting close together on a long wooden bench, holding open a thin book or pamphlet, while a be-wigged gentleman in formal blue waistcoat stands in front of them as if to introduce himself. The setting is reminiscent of the formal gardens of Versailles in France, with a classical statue on a pediment in the wooded backdrop, stairs leading out of the scene at upper left. I have researched the name on the internet and cannot seem to find a listing. Affixed to the backing is a photocopy of the back of the paper, on which is written in Italian a short phrase, which I think might have to do with framing. This traditional scene would be a perfect fit in a formal, classical-traditional interior decorating scheme. Measurements 12" by 8 1/2" and plus a narrow wood frame.
