This is a beautifully executed old oil painting on canvas, likely by an American artist, as the stretcher and canvas (including canvas stencil) appear to be American, circa 1870's or so. The scene is likely somewhere in the Middle East, perhaps along the Nile River in Egypt. The scene includes large and small fishing boats, two figures on the shore, and, in the distance, small houses and palm trees. The painting is signed at lower right, but I can't read the signature. It appears to begin as "F. Mil....". There is some white tape affixed to the reverse, evidence of an old repair to a horizontal tear. Measurements are 8" by 14" and 16 1/2" by 22 1/2" in the attractive gold frame.
