The painting of arid mountains is by the California artist Dea (Statham) Berg, 1908-1994. Berg was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and lived most of her life there. She was a talented painter who had a fascinating life. Doris Statham paints using the name of Dea Berg. Berg was born in Oakland on September 11, 1908 and raised in the Bay Area city of Alameda. She studied music and science at Berkeley and eventually taught organic chemistry at UC San Francisco. She spoke nine languages fluently. Dea, also known as Doris, was married to millionaire engineer and inventor Louis D. Statham, who was well known for the chess tournaments he sponsored for many years, held in the Sierra Nevada town of Lone Pine. The tournaments were named for him. Statham died in 1983. The couple was fond of the area and contributed philanthropically to capital improvements for the town. Freed of financial constraints, Dea was able to therefore paint in her leisure throughout much of her life. In the early 1970's, Statham sold his Holmby Hills mansion in Los Angeles to Hugh Hefner. The home is now the famous Playboy Mansion. She died July 12, 1994. The painting measures 20" by 24", and 27" by 31" in its distressed wood with "wormholes" frame. Painting and frame are in very good condition, with just a very slight horizontal scratch in the upper portion. The reverse shows some moisture contact in the past but there is no visible damage from that on the front side. Encino valley
