This is a fine truly antique watercolor painting of red-coated mounted riders evidently in the midst of a fox-hunt, the work signed at lower left by the well listed French 19th-century artist Evariste-Vital Luminais 1822-1896. Luminais was born in Nantes and showed early talent, studying with Constant Troyon and exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1843. He exhibited again in the 1890s. This work was found recently in Lithuania. Interestingly it features a hand-drawn "French mat" and text in English; this work has traveled widely. Condition: there is extensive, evenly scattered old foxing in the image, less visible from a normal viewing distance. Presently there is no glass. Measurements are 9" by 13 1/2" and 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" with the frame.
