Phillips F.Lewis was born in Oakland, CA on Aug. 26, 1892, into a prominent pioneer family, Lewis was deaf at birth and was first taught to paint by his governess Rose May Craddock. He later studied in California. College of Arts & Crafts in Berkeley for four years under Xavier Martinez, and in Monterey with Armin Hansen. He was a close friend and painting partner of Gottardo Piazzoni and often accompanied him on sketching trips. Using the feathery brushstroke and the light palette of Impressionism, he painted landscapes and scenes of the San Francisco area." E L
