From northern Canada's Inuit native people, comes this 6" by 3 1/2 " green soapstone carving of a standing bird, weighing XX pounds. There is an original label in black and white on the bottom, with "Canada Eskimo Art" and an image of a stylized igloo. These carvings are often signed in syllabics or in English lettering but I do not see any such signature on this piece. There are no chips, nor cracks. The surface is marvellously smooth to the touch. Soapstone comes in many colors, from black through gray to greens. This work is most definitely in the green category, appearing almost as jade or green marble to those unfamiliar with this stone. There is circular scoring to indicate the presence of eyes.
