Original gouache drawing on Whatman illustration board, the subject Roman gladiators in a composite battle scene apparently set in Rome, with familiar landmarks such as the Colosseum and temples worked into the impressively detailed panorama. On the reverse is a 1952 typed label of RKO Radio Pictures, with notations showing that this is a sketch for the movie Androcles and the Lion. Internet research suggests the artist may be American illustrator Don Freeman (1908- 1978). The measures 27" by 10" with the black wood frame. No glass.
