This is an handsome antique, probably early 20th century, Chinese kingfisher women's hairpin jewelry, unmarked, measuring 3.5" in height by 1" in width, on gold-toned metal. It is in good antique condition with some loss of the kingfisher feathers, consistent with its age and usage. Chinese artisans used this procedure called tian-tsui, which means "dotting with kingfishers", for hundreds of years to add color to their decorative items, instead of enameling them with colored paint. This was a very tedious and time-intensive application technique, which makes these items rare, desirable, fragile, and most delicate.
