This is an exquisite vivid navy silk fitted bodice and matching full length skirt of the late 19th century, 1890's decade, the period of the Gilded Age in America. The outfit exhibits many couture design elements. The bodice is beautifully cut and tailored with fifteen black crocheted-covered buttons for closure down the front along with interior hooks and eyes for closure. The bodice has also been fitted with exaggerated leg-of-mutton sleeves which are tightly fitted from the wrist to the elbow and then balloon out to the shoulder. The skirt is full, lined, and has a large snap for closure. In a contrasting color, the silk belt of the bodice encircles the waist line and terminates into a bow at the back of the skirt. The only minor flaw that I can see is a slight fraying of the fabric where the sleeve has been creased for many years. There is also a slight discoloration to the silk belt that surrounds the waist line of the bodice. The outfit would be equivalent to a modern day Size 2/4, as clearly seen in my photographs, the bodice is not able to be buttoned because it is too small for my Size 6 mannequin. This Victorian outfit is dramatic, unique, and masterfully tailored.
