The original Banana Republic Travel and Safari Company has a very interesting history, although brief. It had been founded and created in 1978 from the dreams of Mel and Patricia Ziegler who wanted to create a store and clothing line by acquiring items from their travels around the world. Everything they had acquired had to be authentic, handcrafted, bespoke, artisanal. and unique. They had items manufactured in small forgotten factories where craftsmen still used traditional techniques. Their catalogs were always exceptional and beautifully hand drawn by Patricia, an illustrator, and alongside each was written a whimsical and fictitious story by Mel, a former reporter/journalist. Their innovative company enjoyed great success until 1988 when their concept has been scrapped by the Gap, their parent company, and the Zeigler's lost their creative control.
