Walter Hunt invented the safety pin in 1849. It was a continuous piece of wire coiled and bent so the point would return to a protected position...thus protecting children or adults from painful pin injuries. He ended up selling the rights for around $400. This Baby Chalk figurine was a store display meant to show the advantages of a safety pin. It says, "Safety First" and Pat. Aply'd For", both carved or molded into the base. This is really a neat old advertising display.....but it might be considered a bit "creppy", too.
