John Doulton invested his life’s savings of £100 in 1815. The business specialized in making stoneware articles, including decorative bottles and salt glaze sewer pipes. The Doulton company was popular for stoneware and ceramics and under the artistic direction of John Slater who specialized in figurines, decorative pieces, and character jugs the company flourished. Doulton products came to the attention of the Royal Family in 1901 which allowed Doulton to adopt the new logo and a new name, Royal Doulton. The company added products during the first half of the 20th century while manufacturing fashionable and high quality bone china. Royal Doulton has always been synonymous with high quality and collectability.
