George Wahr's parents were pioneers who immigrated from Germany in 1835. He worked at a local bookstore from the age of 14 and eventually purchased that store. In 1887, he bought out his partners and became sole owner. Mr. Wahr specialized in student supplies, books, and stationery, but he also had a lucrative publishing business. By 1892 he was successful enough to open a second store on State Street. This drafting set which was private labeled for Wahr's second store is complete. The original case is very fragile, and part of the closing snap is missing but all 13 pieces are there. They have not been removed from the case, but they look functional. A previous owner did write his name on the inside of the case.
