Demitasse cups originated in France and actually meant 1/2 of a cup. They were first used for the stronger espresso coffees, which were served in smaller amounts.
This precious English bone china demitasse cup and saucer set was made by the Tuscan China Company. It has an unusual, but dramatic pattern of red, blue and grey flowers with green centers. The cup and saucer are in excellent condition and look as if they have only been displayed since they were purchased. The Tuscan company was established in 1898 and in 1966 Tuscan became part of the Wedgwood Group. They were later renamed “Royal Tuscan” which helps date this set to pre- 1966. Their cups and saucers are usually characterized by large, dramatic flower designs.
