Kenneth Jay Lane turned designing "fake" jewelry into a global business. He didn't take himself too seriously — joking that his costume jewelry wasn't fake or junk. Instead, he would pronounce it "faque" and "junque. His designs resonated with these high-profile women because he approached costume jewelry as if it were couture, with bold colors, dramatic silhouettes, and quality "jewels" that often looked real, despite being glass or plastic. Of course, his outgoing personality helped, too; friends of Lane will recall his charm and quick wit. He once famously said, "I am myself a fabulous fake.

Kenneth Lane graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1954 and moved to N.Y. where he began experimenting with jewelry. He began his career by designing shoes for Christian Dior. Mr. Lane thought that costume jewelry could be beautiful and unique , and he launched his jewelry line in 1963. This new concept revolutionized costume jewelry and it was popular immediately. "Lane changed the landscape of costume jewelry, adding souped-up color, drama, luxury and a wide variety of ethnic motifs, and making it exclusive. Many of his customers combined his pieces with their "real" jewels... and it was often impossible to tell the difference. As he once put it, "Our jewelry is designed for people who want to be noticed."

"I believe that every woman has the right to be glamorous and have always believed that a woman can be just as glamorous in costume jewelry as million-dollar bangles and beads." Said Lane in an interview. Mr. Lane was acclaimed by 'Time' magazine as "the undisputed King of Costume jewelry" and named "one of the three great costume jewelers of the 20th century" by 'Women's Wear Daily', Kenneth Jay Lane has stores in the U.S., U.K., France and Austria, as well as his flagship store in New York City. All Mr. Lane's pieces are signed and are collectible..... the vintage jewelry is sometimes sold at large auction houses such as Christie's or Sotheby's.

Unfortunately Mr. Lane passed away in July of 2017 at the age of 85.
