This diminutive souvenir spoon from Norfolk Virginia reflects a bygone era . A small black child cheerfully eats his watermelon above the row of white cotton bales . The watermelon is green, white, and red, carefully enameled to lend a colorful aspect to the spoon. The spoon was manufactured by the Shepard Mfg. Co, Melrose Highlands, Massachusetts sometime between 1893 and 1923. The back of the spoon is marked "Sterling" beside a capitol "S" ... the maker's logo . Spoons like this are very hard to find, especially when in this exceptionally fine condition. The spoon is 4 inches long which is about the size of a demitasse spoon.
