Prissy Designed By Magge Head
This black child with the happy expression is 13” tall. She is called “Prissy” and is the original design of early NIADA artist Magge Head (Kane). According to the reference book, The American Doll Artist by Helen Bullard, Magge created a group of dolls called Old South Negro characters and Prissy was one of the children. Prissy is jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips and is made of a heavy ceramic material as all of the early Magge Head dolls were. She is dressed in her original red and white cotton dress with a white apron and white pantaloons. She has very large feet and wears no shoes. Her smiling mouth is open with full lips and molded upper teeth. Her nose is broad and her eyes are painted brown (pictured). She has her original black mohair wig. Her head is marked “Prissy, Magge Head, 1966”. Her body is marked 1966, Magge Head, Repro. By F. Mikulec, 1972”, one of her students. The doll is in wonderful condition with no damages, repaint or repairs.
